This prestigious session will recognize the contributions of four early career researchers and highlight their vision and leadership in their respective field of chemical engineering.??
Four speakers will be selected to give 15-minute TED Talk style presentations in the 68th CSChE and XXIX Interamerican Congress of Chemical Engineering. The awardees will give a perspective talk of their own research topic, and how it will influence science, engineering, and society at large in Canada and abroad. Following their presentation, they will participate in a panel discussion. We will not consider narrow technical presentations; the speakers should present their research area and its impact in a broader perspective.?

This technical track covers all general aspects of chemical engineering and, in particular, the chemical engineering research in Latin America. This technical track has been added because the 2018 CSChE Conference coincides with the InterAmerican Congress of Chemical Engineering (IACChE). This track offers the opportunity to researchers of Latin America to present their work in Spanish or Portuguese.?

A circular economy provides an alternative to our traditional linear economy model (extract, make, use and dispose) whereby we keep resources in use for as long as possible in order to extract the most value from them while in use, and then recover and regenerate these resources into new products at the end of their service life.

In the context of rising momentum for a move towards equity in sciences, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM), this session will to offer participants at all levels strategies to overcome obstacles to advancing equity in engineering. Focus is placed on gender disparities to increase awareness of invisible barriers to the professional growth of historically underrepresented groups and to initiate dialogue among members of the chemical engineering society on how we can overcome these barriers. Ultimately, the session hopes to inspire action from the audience to internalize the change, take ownership of their role in addressing inequalities in engineering communities, and take action within their realm of influence to facilitate positive social change in engineering.
This session is aimed at all audiences regardless of their identified gender, their position, or their level of professional experience. It is a space of positive change rather than an atmosphere of negativity or personal blame, so bring your positive energy along to help transform engineering into a place where all are welcome.
The session is structured as follows:
Part 1:?A keynote talk by an invited speaker on the current state of gender diversity in engineering. The keynote will highlight the reality of the current state of gender diversity in STEM and serve as a starting point for the panel discussion.
Part 2:?A guided panel discussion featuring invited representatives from industry, post-secondary institutions, and regulatory bodies. The panel will discuss the efficacy of existing and past initiatives, plus opportunities and challenges in their respective sectors, to inspire ideas of what can be done to address the gender gap.
